Fees for coroner's cases
Due to an often lengthy process and wait time involved with coroner cases, it can take several months for us to receive a copy of the Certified Death Certificate. A Coroner's Case will be listed as either “Pending” or “Homicide”* and, as such, there are certain fees applicable to coroner's cases as outlined below.
Funeral Funding of Michigan will temporarily withhold twenty (20) percent of the assignment amount of coroner cases. Once we receive and forward the Certified Death Certificate to the insurance company and the claim check has cleared our bank, we will factor the following fees from the withholding and provide a refund to the funeral home or cemetery:
5% flat rate for the first 30 days;
3% prorated for additional time over 30 days.
For example:
Funeral home assignment amount = $4,000.00
Funding 80% to customer = $3,200.00
Withholding of 20% = $800.00
Total time from funding to paid claim = 95 days
5% flat rate for first 30 days:
$4,000.00 x 5% = $200.00 = Fee for first 30 days.
3% prorated for additional time over 30 days
$4,000.00 x 3% = $120.00
$120.00 divided by 30 days = $4.00 per day
(95 – 30 = 65)
65 x $4.00 = $260.00 = Prorated fee for additional days over 30
Total combined fee for this Coroner Case = $460.00
Initial Withholding = $800.00
Actual fee = $460.00
Owed to funeral home = $340.00. This amount will be refunded by standard check once end-of-month billing is completed and assuming no outstanding debt or paperwork is owed to us by your funeral home.
If you have any questions regarding coroner case assignments, please call our office and speak with one of our Representatives. We will be happy to assist you.
* FFOM does not withhold 20% when proof is available that the beneficiary is not suspect in the Homicide case.
